So what’s going on with a blank thermostat?

If you’ve ever walked over to the thermostat in your home or business just to find that the screen is completely blank, there are a few things that probably ran through your head. When there is no amount of button mashing that turns on your thermostat, panic can start to set in that the system is broken. Before you assume your heating and air conditioning system is toast, let’s consider some possibilities that could be hindering the proper function of your thermostat:

  1. The battery for the thermostat is dead. Most people would assume that a thermostat would be wired into the house and powered that way, but it’s very common for thermostats to run off a nine-volt or AA battery. Thermostats use such little power that the batteries can last years. If your thermostat’s screen is blank, simply take it off the wall to determine how it is being powered. You can look up the owner’s manual online if you are having trouble taking it off the wall and need assistance.
  2. The circuit breaker tripped in your home or business. If the thermostat is wired into the walls and with your air conditioning system, the breaker could have tripped. If the power is off in your home or business and so is the thermostat, this could definitely be the cause. Locate the breaker box and reset the circuit labeled accordingly. If you reset the circuit and it immediately trips again, call Coastal Home Services immediately. This immediate reset indicates a more serious electrical issue and needs to be resolved as soon as possible.
  3. The thermostat could be dead. Like all appliances, thermostats can die after extended use. If you have tried both of the things above, you may need to look into replacing your thermostat. Our team at Coastal Home Services can install your new thermostat and help you pick one out with all the features you need.
